Wesley Snow had been drifting into one of those dreams again, a flickering black hole, spiralling stairs, and the faint toll of a bell tower, when a sudden knock at the door snapped him awake.
He opened the door to find a boy holding out an envelope. The boy said Wesley’s name before hurrying back into the snow.
The envelope was heavier than usual, cream paper, the sealing wax a dark evergreen colour. Someone had taken trouble with it. Wesley turned it over once before opening it.

The signature meant nothing to him. "S. N. Ow." He tried it aloud once, then twice. Nothing.
